SHHH…. She is meditating….
One day, when my children were respectively eleven and three, I experienced the powerful effect of letting go. Everyone benefited from it. It came as a surprise to my oldest who on this specific day was pushing my buttons. Not just once or twice. In his diligence, he was pushing all of them. You know, one of those trying days.
At the kitchen sink, I kept washing vegetables from the garden and I could feel anger surfacing. Why can’t this child take no for an answer? Why can’t he understand that others are involved, and that No will still be the answer? The more he pushed, the more I became conscious of a rising in my chest. It was subtle but real. The expansion triggered a thought. Let it go. Just breathe.
I made a conscious effort to pay attention to what was happening. I focused my effort on the expansion. And breathed through it.
As I did, at this exact moment, I felt an energy escaping from my mouth. As subtle and as real as cigarette smoke. The buildup of anger had risen in my chest and exited out my mouth.
I turned around and said to him: “It take two to fight. I will not.”
The look of surprise on his face was a million-dollar look.
I dried my hands, went into my meditation room and quietly closed the door.
Within a couple of minutes, my youngest was running through the house and his brother said: “Shhhh….Mom is meditating. Let’s read a book.”
The outcome would not have been the same if I had focused on my son and his annoying behavior.
Directing my attention on the feeling with the desire to observe it instead of using it, a space was created, and it was released. What a difference.
