Unedited excerpt of my memoir – ©2019 Sylvaine Francine
“I spent the night in the company of the moon. She was looking at me. And all around, trees with exotic foliage whispered in the night, nocturnal birds flew and shouted. I slept on my bed made of wood and rope. No walls surround me, just the screen. It is very early, daylight. A rooster blasts its song in the stillness of the early morning. The first ray of the sun transforms our beautiful aviary into a scintillating diamond. What this day will bring, I wonder.”
Alexis and Yvette are still asleep. I put away my journal.
Breakfast magically appears every morning, after our showers have been taken. The same cook brings it. Two quiet knocks on the door. He waits until one of us opens. Always smiley, he is happy to show us his culinary talent. Yesterday he brought a delicious pudding made with a grain I did not recognized and cooked with different milks, sweetened just enough, simmered and flavored with cardamom.
